Bob Lidle, and Eric Ungaro Poland Township Trustees called in today to announce the trustees are paying for a security officer in Poland township school buildings for the next 90 days or the the remainder of the school year.
Schools are quietly reacting to the Connecticut shootings and attempting to insure parents that they are being pro-active in curbing potential gun violence on our innocent children. In fact Don Daley, Poland High school superintendent said the school is spending $ 80,000 thousand dollars to purchase surveillance equipment for the schools in addition to the security.
One of my callers said his experience was overseas and it is routine to put bars on schools windows and have armed security everywhere. My thoughts echo what Ungaro said during the interview, this is not a 3rd world country, the majority of our students go to school without violence daily.
I think it's easy to forget, how well behaved our overall population is on a daily basis. It's natural to want to do something immediately even if it's wrong. Ungaro who is in the trenches daily as a teacher reminded me that this is still America where most people follow the rules.
We should do something but we have to be careful about locking down all aspects of our life and barricading ourselves behind closed doors never taking a chance, that is not how a free country looks.
