I always liked Kenny G. I used to play his music during dinner at weddings that I was hosting. I really wore out the CD "Coming home".
I knew what he looked like, but he was larger than life last night at the Covelli Centre, as he emerged from the darkness at the rear of the auditorium.
He stood on a riser and performed for about 15 minutes within a few feet of our seats. Trademark long curly hair, distinctive nose and I was struck by his slightness of stature.
Dressed in a medium blue suit he is extremely slender and short. Often performers don't say a word but not this time. Kenny G, after performing an opening solo pulled out the mic and began talking about the band and how most of them have been together since high school and have gone around the world a number of times together.
The band was close and you could feel the love for each other on the stage. Fitting since the show was for the benefit of the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County. Kenny G acknowledged the benefit and was genuinely happy to be performing in Youngstown, Ohio.
His percussionist was superb and the entire band received numerous standing ovations. Worth noting was Kenny G's invitation to perform for Bill Clinton at a state dinner. He was hoping to be able to sit with his piano player since he was nervous and ended up sitting with Madeline Albright.
During an intimate performance for the Clinton's G said the president came over and asked if he would like to stay in the Lincoln Bedroom?
He sat at Lincolns desk and found stationary and began writing to his family, guess where I am and whose desk I am sitting? He also wrote to some folks who were not very nice to him in high school and he began with dear A Hole guess where I am sitting. It was a great night at Covelli the gem of our valley.
