June 13, 2008 Let rewindowing begin.
Sunday 06-15-2008 2:02pm ET

Removing nearly 500 windows from the Stambaugh building is one of the biggest blunders made in the renewal of downtown Youngstown. Who removes windows from any building without a plan to cover the opening?  USA parking and the Frangos groups did just that.

Upon hearing that windows were loose and that one may have fallen, someone made the decision "Lets just take them all out". Yes take 500 windows out of one of Youngstown's tallest buildings, how would a decision like that fly in downtown Cleveland, Akron or any city?

They must have had an army of workers to so quickly remove the windows. How about re-assembling that small army and putting them back in. It's incredible that they don't even know what will be used to fill the missing windows?  Plywood, Plexiglas, new windows. What kind of an outfit is the Frangos group that these decision were not made prior to removal. The city is linked to the Frangos group since they own 11 buildings downtown so, the group is calling it a mistake that the city was not notified prior to dewindowing.

Where is the progress on any of the buildings they own, Erie Terminal, Paramount, St. Vincent DePaul, 213 West Boardman. What will the apartments look like when completed at the Wick Building?  When will the work begin, or are the construction buckets hanging on the building just for decoration.

How can one company come in and screw up Federal Square and all the activities planned around Buffalo Wild Wings this summer? Are we a doormat city that a developer or owner can come in reject normal procedures?

Anything short of replacement windows, or  placing the old windows back in there frames correctly will be another step backwards for the comeback city.

June 10, 2008 Why thr CHL got tired of Herb....
Tuesday 06-10-2008 8:58am ET

The way I see it, the CHL got  tired of Herb Washington. I am not saying they treated him well, however they expected $ 100, 000 per year from him to run the league That enables them to hire referees and take care of league business. He had issues with travel re-imbursement so he withheld the yearly fee. A better approach might have been to pay the fee and pursue the travel money after the fact.

For all the gnashing of teeth over leaving the CHL lets be realistic, Herb was about to lose more money this year by being part of the league that doesn't even have a team in the Eastern Time zone other than Youngstown.

People like Bill Weimer and Bruce Zoldan warned everyone that would listen that the travel would kill profits. Recently Weimer admitted in the Vindy that hockey in the valley is a quality of life issue, not a profit center for the BJ Allan company.

The way the leagues are structured it is nearly impossible to turn a profit in hockey. With the CHL, players must be paid from the revenue of 30 home dates and unless you are filling the arena and have lucrative promotional contracts with local benefactors hockey is probably at best an expensive hobby for the owner.

The owner of the Steel hounds and the city have been at odds over what Washington has perceived as no help from the city. Herb Washington is to be commended for bringing hockey to the region when others would not, but the city is not in a position to insulate him from losses.

So there you go Herb, you get A for effort, but a c minus for antagonizing the CHL.
