TRAIN WRECK CLEARED AWAY

Most intersections are open again in Salem, after a train wreck Wednesday night blocked nearly every railroad crossing in the city, for about 18 hours. the only way to get through Salem was by the West State street overpass. Two trains collided when the first train stopped for a man in the tracks, he was not hurt but faces charges.


STOCK WAIVERING

GM stock dipping below ten-dollars a share, what does it really mean? Probably "not" a bankruptcy filing say all the experts we talked to Thursday. former U.S bankruptcy trustee Jim McTevia says things will have to get a lot worse for the automaker. A Merrill-Lynch analyst sees the stock dipping to seven dollars, at Thursday afternoon it was back above ten bucks.

HOME INVASION

A frightening few minutes for four residents of a trailer home in Warren township Thursday morning. Two men stormed into the residence in the Betmar trailer park on Highland avenue. They apparently wanted money. They beat the homeowner with a gun, his girlfriend and two children were not hurt. The victim was able to fire a shot and scare the intruders away. Police looking for the pair.

HEIDI GILL ASSAULTS

The Howland woman involved in that videotaped tasering incident is in trouble. 39-year-old Heidi Gill faces assault and other charges. Austintown police say she walked into the Denny's Restaurant on Mahoning Avenue at 3am Wednesday morning. She said she wanted to slap someone, when an 18-year-old female customer turned around, Gill allegedly hit her and pulled a handful of her hair out. Gill was still jailed Wednesday afternoon.



6 NABBED FOR DRUGS

Intercepting lots of cocaine on area interstate highways. It means federal drug charges for 6 Youngstown residents, who were arrested as part of a drug ring that operated out of Cleveland. The feds picked up 100 kilos of cocaine being driven in to the operation. 40-year-old Benjamin Parker of Youngstown and his brother from Cleveland allegedly ran the operation, they were charged earlier.

What the U.S is spending on imported oil is one-third of the defense budget. U.S.Senator George Voinovich says those billions are also making America more of a debtor country, and that debt is increasingly owned by oil-rich nations. He says it's a national security issue, and we need a second "Declaration of Independence".



RESEARCH GRANT
The research capabilities at Youngstown State Univerisity are growing. With a 2.1 million dollar grant from the Ohio Third Frontier commission, YSU will establish a center for advanced materials analysis. The new equiptment will allow students to study internal chemical structures at the nano scale and atomic level. Martin Abraham, Dean of the College of Science and Technology, says local companies like Fire Line inc. will partner with YSU to conduct research on material applications.



NO REST STOP HERE

The two rest areas on Route 11 south of the Canfield exit are closed. There are safety problems with sidewalks that are uneven, there are two incidents of people falling. There's no funding in place yet to make repairs, but the rest stops are closed for safety reasons.



RENDELL HAS BUDGET

No massive layoffs or shutdowns of state parks and drivers licence centers in Pennsylvania. Legislators and the governor have a spending plan for 2008-2009, just hours before a deadline of midnight Monday night. The deal was announced at 2am Monday morning. Last year, some 25,000 employees were off the job several days in a budget dispute.



THE PA TURNPIKE PLAN

A plan to lease the Pennsylvania Turnpike appears to have the support of U-S Transportation Secretary Mary Peters. Published reports in Harrisburg say Peters is pushing for public-private partnerships similar to the plan Governor Ed Rendell is proposing. Pennsylvania has received an offer of nearly 12 billion dollars for a 75-year lease of the turnpike.


BRING IT HOME

Congressman Tim Ryan has secured 1.2 million dollars to combat crime in the Valley. The earmarks in the Commerce, Justice and Science bill target every level of the justice system, including prevention, detection, and correction. Youngstown will recieve 530 thousand dollars for a neighborhood safety intiative. Warren gets 300 thousand to create and maintain youth programs.


THEY'RE WALKIN TO CLASS

Come the fall some school kids in Newton Falls will have to find their own way to class. To cut costs the board has voted to stop busing ninth through 12 graders. School officials cite the rising cost of fuel and maintenance for the move. The district expects to save 97-thousand dollars with the change.


FREE OUTDOOR MOVIES IN DOWNTOWN YOUNGSTOWN


Valley Residents will have some new entertainment to look forward to in Downtown Youngstown this summer.  The City along with the Chevrolet Centre will host seven outdoor movie nights. The movies will be set up in a grass area in front of the Chevy Centre and will be free an open to anyone who wishes to attend.  Federal Plaza director Phil Kidd tells us that there will be a good variety of films that everyone can enjoy.

"We'll have a little bit for everybody.  We'll have date movies.  We'll have action movies.  We'll have sports movies like Rocky Balboa.  And of course we'll have family movies like Sharks Tale and King Kong and things like that.  So it will be all inclusive and we encourage people to come down bring a lawn chair or blanket and grab some green space and watch a free outdoor movie in Downtown Youngstown."

The movies will be shown Monday nights at 9 o'clock beginning on July seventh and running through August eighteenth.
