Black leaders in the Mahoning Valley have taken a very public stand against what is perceived to be racial overtones to Democractic Chairman David Betras' recent remarks about a couple of committee members who don't want to follow the party's endorsement of John McNally for Youngstown Mayor. The committee members are openly endorsing independent candidate Demain Kitchen, to which Betras threatened to fire them. The African American leaders took to the steps of the County Elections Department to accuse the chairman of playing racial politics by publicly humiliating the committee members. I am not in favor of playing follow the leader, and would rather have independent thinkers when it comes to endorsing candidates. But that's not how the machine runs and you should know that when you serve on the committee. I don't believe Dave Betras was racially motivated in his criticism of the members, he has done it before to others who are not black. His role as Chairman is to have the committee speak with one voice. If committee members went off in their own direction the chairman would lose respect, and the party would fray. Betras could have probably found a more tactful way to get his message across, but the members cannot be allowed to make a public display of questioning his authority. For the good of the party let's hope the two sides can sit down and have a civil discussion. Even if they don't agree at least they might understand the others point of view going forward.
